Ascension Church was established in 1923 as a mission of the Mother of the Sorrow Parish. A small but dedicated group of people met in homes in the community. The group petitioned Bishop John J. Catwell to have their own parish and at his suggestion secured the White Aircraft Building at 117th St. and Broadway. They made an altar and decorated as best they could, and the first mass was said to be on February 11, 1923. Father Joseph Laughran was the celebrant. As the result of the successful fundraisers, monies were raised for a parish and in December of 1923 Bishop Catwell formally established the parish and gave it the name, Church of the Ascension. Father Patrick Dunne was the pastor.

More successful fundraisers were held, and more monies raised for the purchase of property at the corner of 112th St and Figueroa St. Sunday Masses continued to be held in the aircraft building. However, in September 1924, the Sunday Masses were moved to Fortenac Hall at 109th St. and Figueroa. This arrangement continued until the completion of the new church building. The church was completed in September 1925 with a seating capacity of 400. Existing ministries active at the time were: Altar and Rosary Society, Holy Name Society, St. Vincent de Paul Society, the choir, Young Ladies' Sodality, the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine and The Propagation of the Faith.

On Ascension Thursday, May 23,1963, The Most Reverend Timothy Manning, Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles and Vicar General consecrated the main altar of Ascension Church. Sealed in the altar are the relics of Saints Clement and Sixtus, Popes and Martyrs. In 1969, The Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity came to staff the parish. Father James Devaney was the first Missionary Servant Pastor. The Trinitarian Sisters came to join the priest and the brothers in the pastoral care of the parish.

​In June 1997, the Trinitarians ended their assignment with us and we bid them a sad farewell. However, since January 1998, Archdiocesan priests have been staffing our church. Even in its almost 100th year Ascension Parish is still making progressive history.
 

La Iglesia de la Ascensión se estableció en 1923 como una misión de la Parroquia Madre de los Dolores. Un pequeño pero dedicado grupo de personas se reunió en hogares de la comunidad. El grupo solicitó al obispo John J. Catwell que tuviera su propia parroquia y, a sugerencia suya, aseguró el edificio White Aircraft Building en 117th St. y Broadway. El jueves de la Ascensión, 23 de mayo de 1963, el Reverendísimo Timothy Manning, el Obispo auxiliar de Los Ángeles y el Vicario general consagraron el altar principal de la Iglesia de la Ascensión. Selladas en el altar están las reliquias de los santos Clemente y Sixto, papas y mártires. En 1969, los Siervos Misioneros de la Santísima Trinidad vinieron al personal de la parroquia. El Padre James Devaney fue el primer Pastor Siervo Misionero. Las Hermanas Trinitarias vinieron a unirse al sacerdote y a los hermanos en el cuidado pastoral de la parroquia.

En junio de 1997, los trinitarios terminaron su misión con nosotros y les despedimos con tristeza. Sin embargo, desde enero de 1998, los sacerdotes arquidiocesanos han estado trabajando en nuestra iglesia. Incluso en sus casi 100 años, la Parroquia de la Ascensión sigue haciendo  historia progresiva.
